Ocean Lighthouse

This is a simple photo of Pigeon Point lighthouse located just off the beautiful Pacific Coast Highway in California. This is the same area that this other photo was taken. The lighthouse and the surrounding areas were in the process of being refurbished for visitors as part of the state park system so a lot of the paint was fresh.
I wanted to frame the photo so that the picket fence led the eye across the frame towards the lighthouse. Although the fence doesn't look too old you can see the effect the constant mist from the ocean waves has on the paint.
I was also happy to see that the clouds framed the lighthouse against the blue sky, helping to emphasize it even though it's outside the range of focus.

This photo is horrible for one reason, it doesnt suck and actually is good. Which makes me question some of your other past photos even more (like the moon lit orange) Good job

Good use of DOF. Even though the emphasis is on the fence, my eyes are drawn towards the lighthouse. Nice job!

Why did you focus on the fence and not the lighthouse?

Nice photo though

I liked the focused fence and the lighthouse being slight soft. It id help to lead the eye. What I really noticed was that the sky seems to be swirling blue out from behind the lighthouse.

What beautiful composition. I would prefer it be in focus, although like this effect as well. There's an airy quality to the photo. It would be a nice large print.

Very nice description of the photo composition. I think your ideas, framing and angle choice are ideal and make a wonderful picture.

Thanks for all the comments,

Ian-clever backhanded compliment

anonymous-I kept the fence in focus for many of the reasons ali and micki mentioned. The lighthouse draws attention on its own so I wanted to highlight the fence through selective focus.
Also I like to present things in a different way than we percieve them. Normally you would notice the lighthouse first so I think this compostion makes you look at the scene differently.

A bunny in the photo might improve it, but still very nice.

99,9% of the people would focus on the lighthouse. By putting the focus on the fence you created an unusual picture which is not boring to look at. Very creative! Clever!

Thanks for the comments,

Hops- A bunny in any photo would make it better, I'll try to do that.
